Dr O'Colmain has a special interest in Sports Medicine and has a qualification from the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (Glasgow) as well as being a Fellow of the Sports and Exercise Faculty of the RCSI (Dublin).
Currently he is on the FAI panel of doctors for the underage International teams. These include
- Schools Under 18 (boys)
- FAI youth international teams medical panel
He is currently the doctor for Galway United FC and its Academy.
He has also worked with the GAA and the Galway Senior football team as doctor. He is a member of the GAA Doctors Association.

Dr O'Colmain has produced Guidelines for GP's in the area of Drugs and Doping in sport. If you have any questions about this important area, whether you are competing at home or abroad, he will be happy to consult with you. Currently, he is the Anti-Doping officer with Irish Squash.
